Libya is overwhelmingly Muslim. The country is run by a dictatorship. Islamic groups at variance with the state-approved teaching of Islam are banned.
Members of some minority religions are allowed to conduct services. Services in Christian churches are attended by the foreign community. A resident Catholic bishop, with the help of a small number of priests, operates two churches.
