Lebanon

Lebanon has a population of 3.6 million. The civil war between the Muslims and Christian factions ended in 1990. The country is governed by Sunni Muslims and Maronite Christians. The Shi’ite Muslim parties maintain a large bloc of deputies in the national assembly.


According to a 1994 UN report, the government officially recognized 17 religions or denominations including Christians, Muslims, Druze, and Jews. There are five legally recognized Islamic groups that account for 70 percent of the population (Alawite or Nusayri, Druze, Isma'ilite, Shi'a, and Sunni). Thirty percent of the population is Christian 30 percent and of those there are 11 legally recognized Christian groups (4 Orthodox Christian, 6 Catholic, and 1 Protestant).
