Religious Freedom World Report

Prepared by the International Coalition for Religious Freedom

Thailand

Freedom of religion is protected by law and respected in practice. At the time of the drafting of the constitution some members of the drafting committee wanted to include a provision in the constitution declaring Buddhism as the state religion. Religious minorities objected to this proposal and the assembly did not include such a proposal in the constitution. Theravada Buddhism is, in fact the de facto state religion, but other religions are not restricted.
