Everyone has the right to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion. The preamble to the constitution affirms the need to uphold Christian values and civilized norms, with recognition and protection of freedom of faith and worship. It states that the people of the Republic of South Africa acknowledge the sovereignty and guidance of Almighty God.
While South African religious life is generally diverse and dynamic with good relations amongst religious communities living in an atmosphere of freedom, there has been come concern about incidents of urban terrorism specifically linked with a group related to Islam. The group, named People Against Gansterism and Drugs, has been influenced by Qibla, an Islamist organization dedicated to creating an Islamic state in South Africa.
