Religious Freedom World Report

Prepared by the International Coalition for Religious Freedom

Malawi

The constitution states, "All persons regardless of colour, race or creed should enjoy equal rights and freedoms." The government respects this right for the most part. Religious groups must register with the government.

The president of the country is a Muslim and has been accused by some Christian leaders of trying to Islamicize the country. For a period of time, the President sought to replace traditional "Bible knowledge" taught in schools with more universal moral and religious principles. After receiving criticism from Chrisitians he abandoned the plan and was then criticized by Muslim leaders. Aside from one clash between Christians and Muslims over an evangelical tape comparing the Bible and the Koran, relations between religious communities have been relatively amicable.
