Islam is the state religion. Virtually the entire population is Sunni Muslim with a small Christian minority of about one percent. The government imposes no sanctions on those who choose to ignore Islamic teachings. The foreign community supports Roman Catholic, French Protestant, Greek Orthodox and Ethiopian Orthodox churches. Foreign clergy and missionaries may perform charitable works, but proselytizing, while not illegal, is discouraged.
