According to the Constitution of 1967, the Catholic Church is the state religion, "without prejudice to religious freedom, which is guaranteed." Members of clergy may not be elected as senators or deputies. The President of the country must be a member of the roman Catholic Church.
All churches must register with the Ministry of Education and Religion, but the government does not interfere with the practice of religion.
