The Nicaraguan Constitution of 1982 declares that there is no official religion, and that all persons have the right to freedom of conscience, thought and religion. The Nicaraguan government generally maintains these rights in practice.
The 1997 US State Department Report on Religious Freedom made note of harassment of Catholic officials by radical leftists. Some officials received death threats. In 1996 there was a series of bombings of Catholic Churches resulting in the conviction of 12 men. Sandinista National Liberation Front assembly deputies tried unsuccessfully to pass legislation pardoning the culprits.
