The Portuguese Constitution of 1982 declares that the freedom of conscience, religion and worship shall be inviolable. Church and state are separate, and public education is not denominational. No one may be persecuted or deprived of rights because of religious beliefs. In fact, no authority may legally ask anyone to state their religious belief other than for statistical purposes that cannot be identified individually. Political parties may not use names or symbols which are related to any religion or church. Trade unions must be independent of religious organizations.
