Iceland

Article 62 of the 1944 constitution of Iceland declares that the Evangelical Lutheran Church is the state church and will be supported and protected by the government of Iceland. Article 63 allows people of other faiths to form societies for worship in accordance with their creed. No person may be deprived of his civil or national rights on the basis of religious conviction, nor may any person be forced to contribute to a religion other than his own. If a person does not belong to any recognized religion he must pay dues to a university or university scholarship fund.

The 1996 US State Department Report on Human Rights says that, although there is a state religion, the government respects the rights of religious freedom.
