Religious Freedom World Report

Prepared by the International Coalition for Religious Freedom

Denmark

The 1953 constitution of the Kingdom of Denmark establishes the Evangelical Church as the Established Church of Denmark. This church is supported by the state. The king, by law, must be a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The constitution of the Established State is laid down by statute. Citizens of Denmark are entitled to form congregations to worship God "in a manner consistent with their convictions provided that nothing at variance with good morals or public order shall be taught or done." Rules for religious bodies dissenting from the established church are also laid down by statute. No person may be denied civil or political rights or personal liberty because of their religious belief.

There is Evangelical Lutheran religious instruction in state schools, but parents may elect to have their students excluded.
