Lesotho, a small mountain country, has a population of 1.9 million people. Christians account for nearly 80 percent of the population. Indigenous religions make up about 20 percent. There are also small numbers of Muslims, Hindus, and Baha’is.

The Constitution of 1993 provides for freedom of religion, and the government generally respects this right in practice. There is no state religion, and all faiths may worship free of government restriction. Religious groups do not have to meet any requirements to register with the government. Any registered group can file for tax waivers and duty free imports, but few actually apply.

The Catholic Church owns and operates about 40 percent of elementary and secondary schools in the country. The Evangelical Church, the Anglican Church, and the Methodist Church also own and operate schools.

There are no reports of governmental or societal discrimination based on religion, and respect between Muslims and Christians is normal in the country.
